Lake/Forest Lake Bluff Chamber: Tell us a little bit about M on the Square and the unique products and services you offer?
Jennifer Mower: M on the Square is an elegant boutique in Lake Forest’s Market Square, offering distinctive home décor, fine gifts for every occasion, and fresh floral design. M on the Square blends timeless style with modern charm.
LF/LB: What inspired you to take over this wonderful local business?
JM: I have always loved this store dating back to when it was The Trading Post then Molly Flavin’s shop and finally Missy Crowe Poth’s M on the Square. Entering the space has always made me so happy and has been a welcome diversion when I wanted to be surrounded by beautiful and interesting things.
LF/LB: What is your vision or hope for the future of M on the Square?
JM: My hope is that what M on the Square has been for me for so many years will continue to be that for not only our community but for all those who come to Lake Forest for a visit.
We will be expanding some of our current lines and bringing some new things to the shop in the new year including a venture with one of my favorite companies on the North Shore and bridal registry. I registered for most of my wedding gifts at The Trading Post when it was in this space and I think there is a need for our local brides.
The community has been incredibly welcoming and positive, and I am so grateful and want to continue to offer items and services that they desire and encourage everyone to share their thoughts and ideas when coming into the shop!
LF/LB: How does M on the Square plan to support our community under your leadership?
JM: My goal is to make the store a true community partner — not just through donations to organizations that are meaningful to me and our customers, but through collaborations, events, and offerings that reflect what Lake Forest cares about.
LF/LB: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or the business?
JM: When I think back to my childhood, I realize how much my mother shaped my appreciation for beautiful things for the home. We visited every home décor shop and antique fair we could find, and she was always transforming our house, making it more inviting and more interesting with every change. That love of creating beauty stayed with me and influenced my sisters as well; one is now an amazing interior designer in Dallas, and my youngest sister curates pieces from around the world and helps design RH flagship stores.
I also feel incredibly grateful for the continuity in this space. I adore Missy and am so happy she and Lisa remain involved. Missy babysat my children, and now my daughter has worked in the shop and babysits for her children. It’s one of those moments in life where everything seems to come full circle and stepping into ownership of M on the Square truly feels meant to be.
